Female genital mutilation (FGM) is a human rights’ violation. Yet, in many places it is still practiced and in some it is a taboo no one talks about. With data about its prevalence you can break this taboo.
On this online platform you will find instructions and advice on how to design a small & simple FGM-survey, how to extend it, how to evaluate and how to present the results.
Guidelines and questionnaires are also available in Persian, Arabic and Malay (check the language menu on top).
You know that FGM is practiced in your community?!
And you want it to be discussed and questioned but nobody is talking about it in public? Or it is hushed down: People say it is an ancient tradition not practiced anymore. Or they say: It is just symbolic, nothing to worry about.
But: it is a serious health and women’s rights issue and you are quite sure that it is still practiced. So what to do? A good way to initiate a public debate is to publish some survey results, however small the sample may be.
Of course, you cannot replace the apparatus of government departments or international organisations: They can afford to conduct surveys on a nationwide level and thereby collect more reliable data than a small survey can. But that’s not the point:
- Local surveys can serve as “triggers” and door openers. They proof to decision makers that there is a problem. Whether local politicians or international organizations: They don’t need to act as long as there is no data. In most cases they will not act without data even if you engage in outspoken activism.
- Data drags the big players into action! Initiate a public debate about FGM, be the first to produce data, make it an issue for your community, your government and/or international body like UNICEF. The UN are obliged to intervene against FGM – if there is reliable data, because there is a UN resolution banning FGM.
- It doesn’t matter if you are just a small group in your area or even just an individual activist! You can start to change things. It is up to you. And internationally there are activists waiting to support you. Read more about us.
